ORBTY and CEDAE: Technology in favor of water quality

ORBTY has developed an intelligent system that transforms satellite images into strategic decisions for the management of Lagoa Feia (RJ)

ORBTY participated in Blue Rio’s first call and was selected by the State Water and Sewer Company (CEDAE) of Rio de Janeiro to develop a Lagoa Feia monitoring system using satellite images. The project focused on the evaluation of water quality, with emphasis on the detection of the presence of chlorophyll-a, turbidity and the monitoring of the trophic state of the reservoir.

The system developed by ORBTY goes beyond CEDAE’s water collection point, allowing the monitoring of the entire lagoon, in addition to consolidating historical and environmental data that assist in decision-making. An alert system was also implemented that notifies when water quality has critical levels, offering greater agility and precision in facing risk situations.

This information is presented in the web application developed by ORBTY, GEMAP (Geospatial Mapping of Aquatic Parameters), which shows the current and historical situation of the lagoon, containing almost 6 years of water quality data estimated by satellite (2020-2025).

The analysis of these data was divided into two sections:

A) Spatial Analysis

in the initial tab, the user has access to an interactive map that displays the condition of water quality (chlorophyll-a, material in total suspension and trophic state) based on the chosen date. This tab also presents a histogram of the water quality values in Lagoa Feia for the selected date, so the user obtains, quickly and intuitively, an overview of the current situation of the body of water. In addition, in this tab there is also a water quality alert system for the entire lagoon and for the water collection point, issuing alerts in case of deterioration of quality, based on a pre-established standard;

B) Temporal Analysis

for more in-depth analysis, this tab allows you to view the historical evolution of water quality (chlorophyll-a and material in total suspension), facilitating the comparison between the current condition and the average of previous years. In addition, the user also has access to environmental variables such as average temperature (water and air), precipitation and reservoir area, which can help explain any changes and trends in water quality. Another available parameter is the classification of the trophic state of the lagoon, being possible to analyze the evolution of the trophic level of the water over time, identifying trends and times of attention.

The project was successfully completed and approved by CEDAE. This result reinforces ORBTY’s maturity to develop advanced environmental monitoring solutions, applicable to different contexts of the blue economy.

ORBTY, contributing to the preservation and sustainable use of water in Brazil and throughout the world.
