High values of this index indicate healthy and dense vegetation, low values suggest sparse or stressed vegetation (vegetation with some kind of deficiency), and negative values are typically associated with non-vegetated areas or non-vegetative targets (such as water or exposed soil). The figure below shows an example of crop health monitoring, where vegetative vigor decreases from green to red on the map.
